“Winnipeg Taxi industry launches Taxi advantage campaign: Industry has made major changes building on its customer and community focus"
Winnipeg’s Taxi industry has launched a new website winnipegtaxi.ca as part of its new #TaxiAdvantage campaign to promote the advantages of using Winnipeg’s taxi industry.
The Winnipeg Community Taxi Association, which represents Winnipeg‘s major taxi companies, said that their message is twofold. “There have been a lot of positive changes with the Taxi industry Winnipeg that many people may not even be aware of. We offer key advantages for people looking for a vehicle for hire.”
The Association pointed out that over the last few years Winnipeg’s major taxi companies have brought in state of the art dispatch services that can be accessed by either local call centres or through apps that are providing some of the best on-time performance anywhere in North America. The taxi industry has added wheelchair accessible vehicles, which in combination with the City of Winnipeg’s central dispatch which is operated by Winnipeg’s taxi industry have resulted in a major improvement in service.
Winnipeg's taxi industry is sending a clear message to Winnipeggers. “Unlike vehicle for hire companies like Uber and Lyft we are Winnipeg owned and operated by hundreds of local small business owners. We have phone centres that are locally operated. they don’t .When it comes to wheelchair accessible service, all of the central dispatch service is provided by taxis, none by Uber. Taxi drivers have to have training, Uber drivers don’t. Taxis have cameras and shields for the safety of drivers and passengers, Uber vehicles don’t.” said Ram Valluru General Manager Duffy’s Taxi.
“Taxis have payment options that include cash, can be hailed from the street, have fixed affordable rates with no surge pricing Uber doesn’t. When it came to the Covid pandemic, it was the Taxi industry that was there 24/7 for Winnipeggers not Uber. said Unicity Taxi General Manager Abhishek Tara.
At the same time the taxi industry, recognizes that many people aren’t aware of the changes that have taken place. “ Our message is that people have a choice and that Winnipeg taxis offer many advantages.” said Tara.
Finally, the Taxi industry stressed that they are committed to even further change. “We have been working to improve our relationship with Indigenous peoples, including through a public statement on reconciliation that was, driven by Indigenous women and two spirited peoples. We’re focussing on human trafficking, doing what we can to be part of the solution to this horrific exploitation of people, particularly women.” said Valluru.
"Our message is clear. Much has been accomplished but there is more to do as we continue to provide the best possible community based taxi service to Winnipeggers and visitors to our city,” stressed the Association.

We believe that everyone deserves access to safe and reliable transportation.
Accessible Taxi Service
Winnipeg’s taxi industry is committed to providing accessible taxi service including wheelchair accessible taxi service.
Duffys Taxi and Unicity Taxi have partnered to provide a central dispatch for wheelchair accessible vehicle WAV service in Winnipeg as part of a pilot project by the City of Winnipeg vehicle for hire branch.
Initially projected to provide dispatch for 10,000 trips a year the central dispatch is now on track to 25,000 trips per year. It has helped greatly improve service and provide on time performance comparable to standard taxis. All of these trips have been provided by licensed taxis, none have been through PTP providers like Uber.
Winnipeg’s taxi industry acknowledges the advocacy of the accessibility community in making this happen, particularly the advocacy of the Independent Living Resource center, which also provides training on accessibility issues to the taxi industry.
Indigenous Reconciliation
Winnipeg’s taxi industry is committed to Indigenous reconciliation.
We are committed to an Indigenous Ied initiative with the leadership of women and two spirited people. This led to the release of the following statement at the Canadian human rights museum on November 14 2022.
Safe Transportation for Indigenous peoples
Action plan
Winnipeg’s taxi industry acknowledges Canada’s history of colonialism, oppression and genocide towards Indigenous Peoples. We also acknowledge the Intergenerational trauma from residential schools, the 60s scoop and the history of and ongoing reality of the oppression and victimization of Indigenous women and girls and two spirited people.
Winnipeg’s taxi industry is fully committed to truth and reconciliation, including in particular the recommendations in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission report related to safe Transportation for Indigenous peoples. This includes a commitment to a zero tolerance approach to sexual harassment and sexual assault. This includes recognizing that Indigenous peoples and in particular Indigenous women and girls and two spirited people have faced unsafe transportation in vehicles for hire in Winnipeg, including taxis.
Winnipeg’s taxi industry has heard first hand and respects the lived experience of Indigenous women and girls and two spirited people who have experienced unsafe transportation with taxis. We have heard and are committed to support their call for change.
We are committed to working for real change, building on the recommendations we have heard from Indigenous women and two spirited people. In collaboration with Indigenous People and in the Spirit of Reconciliation we will undertake to work in partnership to achieve the following :
Driver training, ensuring that Indigenous women and girls and two spirited people have a safe place to file complaints or share concerns over vehicles for hire, an independent advocate that can work to resolve issues, the option to have restorative justice and counselling and other supports.
Winnipeg’s taxi industry is committed to working with its regulator, the City of Winnipeg, and Indigenous Peoples, in particular Indigenous women and girls and two spirited people. We will work with an Implementation Committee comprised of Indigenous People who have worked with us to move towards true reconciliation.
We recognize that a multi-pronged approach is needed and that some results can be achieved immediately while some will take longer.
Our commitment is to achieve real change and justice in the spirit of Truth and Reconciliation.
